Thunder Kick Off Championship Defense with Thrilling Double Overtime Victory

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came to the Thunder back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Determination and defense," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."

Prior to the tip-off, the team's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were presented with their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the road team.

The Lakers were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
