The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Romance
In this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly gnome he expected.
A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the other. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.
Naturally, such a setup needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression
You won’t find very many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days instead of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
