One-time Broadcaster Alan Jones Pleads Not Guilty to Twenty-seven Allegations

The veteran broadcaster is confronting 25 counts of indecent acts and two accusations of inappropriate touching involving a total of nine alleged victims, subsequent to the prosecution disclosed that two individuals would no longer be part of the legal proceedings.

Judicial Proceedings

The accused was expected to appear in the local court on that day to confront 44 original allegations of indecent assault concerning 11 different alleged victims all over 17 and above that age. Yet, the broadcaster was not obliged to attend during the abbreviated session at Downing Centre Local Court.

The magistrate was informed that 17 counts had been dismissed and two of the alleged victims were no longer the case.

“There has been a major shift in the defendant’s case,” his lawyer his representative stated to the court.

Defense Pleas

His counsel clarified that Jones had submitted denials on all of the current allegations. The trial will move forward in a local court in front of a judicial officer, instead of in the superior court with a judicial jury.

Wrench asked for an eight-week adjournment to address what he described as “outstanding” legal matters, including alleged unauthorized disclosures to the media.

He mentioned that fresh accusations had surfaced on the previous Monday, and journalists were alerted quickly after his team was informed by the prosecution.

Trial Timeline

The judicial officer at first called the duration of the proposed adjournment but ultimately approved the request. The case is planned to reconvene on 11 November, with the main hearing slated for next year.

Officials was told that the DPP estimated the hearings would last six weeks, while the Jones’s lawyer believed it could take up to five months.

“We lack the resources to deal with a extended trial,” the magistrate commented, adding that the matter was a “massive drain on already stretched resources.”

Background

Jones was initially indicted with carrying out a number of violations in several settings across New South Wales between two decades ago and 2019.

Police formed an investigative unit in early 2024 to examine alleged sexual offenses and unwanted contact occurrences connected with Jones.

Jones has previously denied all claims and stated that he was planning legal proceedings against media outlets for what he referred to “completely untrue” allegations.

He previously appeared in December of last year, when it was proposed that he would face a trial by jury.

“I am certainly not guilty, and I will present my argument to a jury,” the broadcaster said at the time. “It’s important to know … these claims are all either baseless or they twist the truth.”
