A report looking at the utilization of artificial intelligence in British schools discovered that only 2% of pupils between the ages of 13 and 18 said they did not use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, while the vast majority said they regularly utilized it.

Negative Impact on Abilities

In spite of AI’s widespread use, 62% of the pupils reported it has had a unfavorable effect on their abilities and development at school. A quarter of the participants agreed that artificial intelligence “enables me to obtain answers with minimal personal effort”.

Another 12% said artificial intelligence “hinders my original thought”, while comparable figures reported they were less prone to address issues or produce innovative text.

Almost 50% of the two thousand students questioned expressed they were anxious their classmates were “covertly employing artificial intelligence” for academic work without their instructors being able to detect it.

Request for Instruction and Positive Elements

A lot students reported that they sought more help from teachers for the appropriate utilization of artificial intelligence and in evaluating whether its responses was reliable. A project aimed at supporting teachers with AI education is being launched.

But, the bulk of students said using AI aided them develop additional competencies, such as 18% who indicated it aided them comprehend challenges, and 15% who said it aided them generate “innovative and improved” ideas.

Pupil Perspectives

When requested to expand, a 15-year-old female pupil said: “I have been able to understand maths better and it helps me to solve difficult questions.”
