{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation happened on the third rotation when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track track officials can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were informed and placed on standby to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"
"We are still investigating what occurred following that moment"
